Getty Images announces $40,000 Creative Bursary to support emerging photographers

Getty Images Creative Bursary will foster new generation of commercial photographers to realise creative potential; Submissions now open for global funding


London – 19 October 2017: Getty Images, a world leader in visual communications, today announces the new Getty Images Creative Bursary, to support the development of the next generation of commercial photographic talent. The $40,000 annual bursary will support emerging photographers in the creative field, enabling them to realise photographic projects – ideas that without funding, may otherwise not get off the ground.


Founded with the aim of enabling emerging photographers to break into the commercial photography industry, Getty Images Creative Bursary asks photographers to submit a project proposal and visual brief, in support of their creative idea. Applicants have complete creative freedom and can submit ideas across the photography spectrum, from ground-breaking conceptual shoots, to creative portraiture, or more traditional stock. The Bursary supports the next generation of talent, meaning recipients must be 30 years or under, or have been pursuing photography as a professional career for less than three years. Three recipients will be selected every quarter, 12 per annum, with judges awarding bursaries equating to $10,000 per quarter.


“At Getty Images we place great importance on cutting-edge creative photography, trends and art-direction, yet we recognise that breaking into the industry is difficult; it takes considerable time and financial resource to realise and fund this kind of boundary-pushing imagery,” said Andy Saunders, Senior Vice President, Creative Content at Getty Images.  “Yet in today’s digital age, it is vital as an industry that we continue to attract and nurture emerging commercial industry talent.”


Saunders continues, “This new Bursary is a dream project of ours – we are committed to supporting and fostering photographic talent, and are looking forward to working with a diverse group of young and emerging photographers, helping to enable their creative vision.”


In addition to receiving the funding, photographers will be offered the opportunity to license their awarded work through, with 100 per cent of royalties from these projects going back to the photographers themselves. Following this, recipients will also be offered the opportunity to join Getty Images’ contributor network where they can license previous and future work with Getty Images, on a separate and traditional contributor contract.


Interested photographers are encouraged to apply from today with the first bursaries granted this coming December and thereafter each quarter.


Shortlisted projects will be judged by an acclaimed industry-leading panel, including:

– Andy Saunders, Senior Vice President, Creative Content, Getty Images

– Andy Adams, Photographer and Publisher of Flak Photo

– Jeanie Annan-Lewin, Founder of Moodboard Zine and London-based fashion editor and stylist

– Andrea Wise, Co-Founder of Diversify Photo and independent artist and editor

– Brent Lewis, Senior Photo Editor of ESPN’s The Undefeated and Co-Founder of Diversify Photo


The Getty Images Creative Bursary is part of Getty Images’ wider grants programme, which since its inception has donated over US$1.4 million to photographers around the world.
